What Exactly Is Search Engine Optimization?

Simply put, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process involved in getting people to see a website. There are particular aspects of each website that ensure that a site appears high on the search engine results page (SERP).

Let’s put that into an example. If you need a local service, you will likely turn to Google and type your city name plus the service type. Your search might look like this: Bakersfield Dentist. Look familiar? (Don’t worry, we search like that, too!)

So, what shows up in your search is a direct result to Search Engine Optimization. Depending on the device you’re using, a search for “Bakersfield Dentist” yields a search result with about 10 companies on the first page. You’ll typically see a few paid ads on top, below is a map section with businesses, which can also be optimized, and below that are 10 companies’ websites, which are organic listings. These websites appear in order of how good their SEO is. The sites with the best SEO will display on Page 1. The less optimized your website is, the less likely you’ll be discovered, if ever at all.

So how does Search Engine Optimization actually work?

For many years now, Google has used algorithms to determine website page rankings. (An algorithm is a set of calculations and rules followed by a problem-solving operation or computer.) If your main search keywords (like Bakersfield Dentist) land your website on Page 1 of a search– then great! Your site is being recognized by this algorithm and rewarded by Google, so to speak, for having good SEO. However, if on the other foot, your website is showing up on Page 8 of a search, then you’re missing out on potential business.
